## What is bat sound analysis software?

## How each tool identifies bats

The fundamental difference between BioSonic and Kaleidoscope Pro is in how they process bat recordings. Understanding this difference explains why their accuracy numbers diverge so significantly.

### BioSonic: deep learning on spectrograms

BioSonic converts each audio file into a spectrogram image and passes it through a convolutional neural network trained on 2.5 million bat calls and 3.5 million noise files. The model was curated by 12 bat experts across five European countries. Because it operates on the full spectrogram image, BioSonic can detect multiple species in a single recording (up to 7), recognise partial calls, and distinguish between echolocation, feeding buzzes, and social calls.

### Kaleidoscope Pro: HMM-based classifiers

Kaleidoscope Pro uses Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) with Fisher scores and winnow classifiers to detect and classify bat calls (Agranat 2013). The classifier is updated with new software releases, typically every 2–3 years.
